Celebrate Geography with National Geographic's Geography Awareness Week. The theme of this year's event is "Explore! The Power of Maps". 

Here at the Department of Geography at The Ohio State University, there will be multiple events celebrating Geography Awareness Week. Below you will find our preliminary schedule and signup/registration links for the special events.

Monday, Nov 16: Life after College

12:00-1:30 Graduate School Prep Panel @ 1186 Derby Hall. Bring your lunch with you!

Are you an undergraduate student considering graduate school in Geography, Spatial Analysis, or Atmospheric Sciences? Current graduate students in the Department of Geography will provide information on what graduate school is really like and what it takes to get accepted into a top ranked graduate program. Attend the Graduate School Prep Panel to gain insider knowledge on the graduate school admissions process and what life is like as a graduate student.   


4:00-6:00 Careers in Geography/GIS: Success Stories from OSU Graduates @ 1080 Derby Hall

Have you ever found yourself wondering, "What am I going to do with my Geography or GIS degree after I graduate?” If so, plan to attend Careers in Geography/GIS: Success Stories from OSU Graduates. This event is intended for undergraduates majoring in Geography and GIS, but it is open to all students interested in pursuing careers in Geography or Geographic Information Science. A panel of alumni will lead a discussion about what it takes to be successful after graduation. Confirmed panelists include Gary L. Sharpe, Founder and Owner of Health Care Logistics, Jillian Woltz, Training Specialist at GeoAMPS, Robert Forrest, Senior Consultant in Data Science at Nationwide Insurance, and Hallie Liu, Cartographic Technician at the Chugach National Forest in Alaska. 

 

Tuesday, Nov 17: Atmospheric Sciences Day

11:00-1:00 Tour of Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Register here.

If you have never been to west campus to tour the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, this is your chance! The BPCRC is one of only three polar and alpine glacier research centers in the U.S., and it houses over 7km of ice cores from across the globe, including the one and only ice core from the glacier on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Registration is open to the first 40 students, so sign up now! Transportation will be provided. 


5:00-5:30 Weather Balloon Launch @ The Oval

We will be launching the famous red and gray weather balloons on the Oval promptly at 5pm. Meet on the Oval side (south side) of Derby Hall at 4:50pm. **Event is weather dependent**.


6:30-8:30 Careers in Atmospheric Sciences Panel @ 1080 Derby Hall. Food will be provided. 

Are you unsure what career you want to pursue with your Atmospheric Sciences or Climatic Studies degree? Attend the Careers in Atmospheric Sciences Panel to hear from a panel of meteorologists working in applied research, academics, and the private sector and to learn what it takes to be successful in the field of meteorology. Confirmed panelists include Dr. Jay Hobgood, professor in the Atmospheric Sciences program, Dr. Aaron Wilson, researcher at the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, Chris Birchfield, meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Brownsville, TX, Mike Groenke, Domestic Flight Dispatcher at Executive Jet Management, and Brian Haines, meteorologist at NWS Wilmington, OH. 

 

Wednesday, Nov 18: GIS Day at Thompson Library

Join the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA) for GIS Day at Thompson Library

11:00-1:00 Lightning Lecture Lunch @ Thompson Library, First Floor

GIS Day is an annual event for students, staff, faculty, and visitors to learn about the power of geovisualization techniques. The "Lightning Lectures Lunch" will feature 10-minute talks on a wide variety of topics related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Speakers include faculty, staff, students, and representatives of government and industry groups. Food and beverages will be provided.

1:00-4:00pm GIS Exhibits @ Thompson Library, First Floor
Exhibitors will be available for a GIS information fair from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. GIS professionals from municipal, academic, and industry organizations will be available to speak with students about possible careers in GIS and the application of geographic technology in real-world scenarios.

 

Thursday, Nov 19: 2015 Geography Bowl Competition

5:00-8:30 Geography Bowl Competition @ 1080 Derby Hall. Food will be provided.

We are giving away $1,750 in scholarships! Test your knowledge by answering introductory geography related questions. Each team will compete in six rounds. The four highest scoring teams will advance to Friday night's championship rounds. First place will receive $1,000, second place receives $500, third place receives $250, and fourth place receives t-shirts. Each team must have 3-5 undergraduate contestants. Academy students and students graduating AU15 are not eligible to receive the scholarship money, but they are eligible to compete. A maximum of three contestants may be Geography, Atmospheric Sciences, or GIS majors. **Only the team captain must be available from 5-5:30pm for a mandatory orientation session. Competition starts at 5:30pm.

Friday, Nov 20:

11:30-1:00 Lunch and Learn with Brian Lewis @ 1080 Derby Hall. Lunch will be provided. RSVP here.

Brian W. Lewis is an alumnus of OSU’s Department of Geography. He received his BA in Geography in June of 1976. While pursuing his PhD at Ohio State, he was offered a full-time position as Lockheed Martin, which he accepted. This allowed him to recruit students from Ohio State, which he did for more than six years. Brian is currently the Senior Staff Software Engineer at Lockheed Martin. This informal lunch and learn is an opportunity for students to learn valuable tips about the job search process from a successful alumni who spent numerous years recruiting OSU students. Brian has used his Geography degree to the fullest and is excited to share his knowledge and insights with current students in the Department of Geography.
