Historical Points of Pride in the Near Eastside

 

This part of the site is designed for Near Eastside Columbus residents and community organizations that need maps and information about the vibrant history of the area.

A Future for the Near East Side: (2011)

 

 

This poster-size map shows where Near Eastside middle schoolers like to go for fun (both on the Near Eastside and in Columbus as a whole) and what activities/amenities they would like in their ideal neighborhood. 

 

This map was developed in collaboration with Aslyne Rodriguez and youth in the After-School All-Stars program at Champion Middle School. The map was designed by OSU undergraduates: Erin Johnson, Jason Johns, Cannus Thieu, and Joe Seelbach.

 

Historical Points of Pride Wall Map: (2009)

This particular 36 by 24 inch wall-size map highlights 24 historical points of pride in the neighborhood.  The map includes brief descriptions of the locations. 

 

This map was requested by Mr. Melvin Steward of the Mt. Vernon Ave. District Improvement Association and Carla Wilks of AAASCEC.  The map was designed by OSU undergraduates: Derek Boogaard, Jonathan Lee and Kevin Albertus.

Near Eastside Entertainment Venues Circa 1950 Map: (2009)

This one sided 8.5 by 11 inch map includes a re-creation of the vibrant African American cultural and entertainment district circa the 1950s.

 

This map was requested by Mr. Melvin Steward of the Mt. Vernon Ave. District Improvement Association and Carla Wilks of AAASCEC.  The map was designed by OSU undergraduates: Carrie Miller, Alex Eddy, and Will Kammerer.

Walking Tour of the Near Eastside History: (2009)

This 12 page booklet of maps highlights different aspects of the neighborhood’s history including churches, famous people, etc and can be used as a self-guided walking tour of the area.  

 

This map was requested by Mr. Melvin Steward of the Mt. Vernon Ave. District Improvement Association and Carla Wilks of AAASCEC.  The map was designed by OSU undergraduates: Paul Benson, Kiril Vatev, and Michael Rieser.
