I am pleased to report that Michael Niedzielski (PhD 2009; Morton O’Kelly advisor) obtained an award of a research fellowship in Europe:  a POLONEZ grant. Mike is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Dakota. POLONEZ is a Polish National Science Centre funding program addressed to incoming researchers who may apply fellowships to host institutions in Poland. The POLONEZ program receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement. Well done Mike and this is very exciting.

We have spoken recently of the opportunities for funded work in Europe, and one implication of Brexit, which is yet to be fully worked through, is whether there will be implications for British applicants to these generous Euro funded programs. Stay tuned!

Welcome back to Harvey Miller who has returned from a trip to Vienna, Austria. As well as sampling the fine ambience of that city, Harvey served on a very detailed PhD panel discussion of his research and attended a conference.

I am delighted to refer you to a new promotional video for Geography 2750 prepared by Ola Ahlqvist and the folks at ODEE:

I think this is terrific. Feel free to suggest ways to use it for enticing students to take our class! It is already on our web site and will be used on the hallway video screens. We always are open to new ideas to filter onto these rotating screens, which, by the way, we share with the other departments in Derby Hall.  So far the geography material has held up very well indeed.

This week we bid farewell to Ricardo Camargo and Fatima Lima who have returned to Brazil following their studies here. The sabbatical year really flew by. There are numerous papers in review resulting from this collaboration, and they enjoyed their time in Columbus.

The new edition of ASC’s on-line Insight focuses on climate and climate change.  There is a really excellent and comprehensive review of some of OSU's expertise in Global Climate Impacts. There is lots of informative material from the work of Ellen Mosley-Thompson and Lonnie Thompson. The Ice Core Paleoclimate Research Group, founded by the Thompsons, has extracted ice cores from some of the most inhospitable places on the planet. The ice core group and Aaron Wilson (with a nod to the State Climate Office of Ohio - SCOO) are featured.
