Graduate Certificate of Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST)

The Graduate Certificate of Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) at Ohio State provides introductory and in-depth training to practitioners and students from various professional and academic fields.

By completing this certificate, you will develop methodological and technical skills in mapping, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and geospatial data analytics that will help you advance your professional career and enrich your research skills.

You are required to complete 12 credit hours (4 courses). 

Required course:

  • GEOG 5210 Fundamentals of GIS

Elective courses (choose no more than two from the following):

  • GEOG 5103 Intermediate Spatial Data Analysis (prereq: 4103 or permission)
  • GEOG 5200 Cartography and Map Design
  • GEOG 5225 Geographic Applications of Remote Sensing

Specialty courses (choose at least one from the following):

  • GEOG 5201 GeoVisualization (prereq: 5200)
  • GEOG 5212 Spatial Database Design for GIS (prereq: 5210 & CSE 1114 or 5210 & permission)
  • GEOG 5222 GIS Algorithms and Programming (prereq: 5210)
  • GEOG 5223 Design and Implementation of GIS (prereq: 5222)
  • GEOG 5226 Spatial Simulation and Modeling in GIS

Admission is open for both Spring and Autumn semesters.

  • Autumn semester deadline: May 15
  • Spring semester deadline: November 15

Admission requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree with 2.5 or higher cumulative undergraduate GPA
  • Transcripts
  • Statement of purpose (1 page)
  • Resume or CV
