GeoWeek
Annually, the Department of Geography participates in Geography Awareness Week in conjunction with National Geographic. In 2019, GEO Week was held Nov. 12-15 with the theme Igniting the Spirit of Exploration. We offer opportunities for students from across the university to engage with geography in a new way. As part of our programming, we routinely host events that enhance the exposure to geography by making it fun and interactive, such as our Geoguessr competition, and Geography Bowl. In addition to these activities, the department provided learning opportunities that included speakers on varying topics, a graduate research forum, informational sessions, and a workshop on weathercasting. Students participated in GISday on Wednesday, Nov. 13 in association with the Research Commons, Center for Urban and Regional Analysis, and the University Libraries. GeoWeek for 2020 will occur November 15 through November 21stwhere the theme will focus on Education Awareness and Environmental Awareness. GeoWeek in 2020 may look a bit different for the Department of Geography and students due to the current pandemic but we look forward to engaging with new students and bringing geography to the university.

Issues ranging from sustainable transportation, climatic change impacts on infrastructure, to the human impact on cities and cultures. The colloquium series is an effort to engage in the question of urbanization on changing landscapes. The 2020-2021 colloquium series will focus on “A World on the Edge” and will discuss issues ranging from social and political justice, the rise of fascism across the globe, political ecology, and environmental impacts and policies. The colloquium series will be held via webinar throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. If you would like to keep up-to-date on our series, you can sign up for our weekly update.
