Chairman O'Kelly's News Brief

Morton O'Kelly

Elisabeth Dowling Root, is part of the Discovery Themes' Translational Data Analytics @ Ohio State initiative. Her work was mentioned last Monday in The Daily Post.  Great publicity for her work which studies “the ways in which big data can be used to improve children’s health around the world.” By the way, Elisabeth has just returned from field work in the Philippines.

Congratulations to Lili Wang, who successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on Monday. Lili's dissertation is titled "Becoming Urban the Chinese Way: The Politics of Urban Planning and Urban Change in Nanjing, China." Lili's committee members were Ed Malecki and Nancy Ettlinger. Our resident Urban China expert Max Woodworth is to be commended for his service as advisor. Lili will begin a postdoc at City University of Hong Kong in January. Good luck, Lili!

Some good news to report this week on the 11th Annual International Scholar Research Exposition at OSU. It annually highlights what international scholars are researching at OSU. The Opening Reception for the exposition was in Bricker Hall last Friday afternoon, with President Michael Drake and Vice President for Research Caroline Whitacre. Our own  Bryan Mark and colleagues had two posters from their MORSL group featuring work led by 2 of their 4 postdocs, Sarah Laborde (France) and Asmita Murumkar (India). Note also that: 2014 Geography PhD grad Alfonso Fernandez is also co-author on both posters (he did a postdoc on the project before his faculty position at Univ Concepcion, Chile); and  Ningchuan Xiao is also part of the MORSL group, and a co-author on Sarah’s poster. You’ll recognize one of our former undergrads named here too: Nate Henry.

The posters are: “Assessing Impacts of Climate Change on Spatio-temporal Variability of Rainfall and Temperature in the Logone River Basin (Africa)” by Asmita Murumkar, Michael Durand, Mark Moritz, Bryan Mark, Ian Hamilton, Alfonso Fernández, Sui Phang, Sarah Laborde, and Apoorva Shastry.

--and--

“Coupled natural and human dynamics of the Logone Floodplain, Cameroon” by Sarah Laborde, Mark Moritz, Mouadjamou Ahmadou, Michael Durand, Alfonso Fernández, Ian M. Hamilton, Nathaniel Henry, Hahn Chul Jung, Saïdou Kari, Aboukar Mahamat, Bryan Mark, Asmita Murumkar, Sui Chian Phang, Apoorva Shastry, Paul Scholte, Ningchuan Xiao, and Roland Ziebe.

To see the impressive list of affiliations, please visit the posters in the lobby of Bricker Hall  (first and second floor) where they are on display.

Please enjoy the rest of the Thanksgiving weekend.
