Topic: The Restructuring of Faculty Careers: Trends, Issues, and Models for the Future

Abstract:

The past three decades have witnessed a major restructuring in faculty careers.  Tenure-track and tenured faculty appointments have been declining as a share of the professoriate while non-tenure track positions, part-time and full-time, have rapidly increased.  In this presentation, I discuss the factors that have influenced these far-reaching changes and draw attention to the diversity of work and career progression within the fast-growing non-tenure-track faculty segment.  The restructuring challenges us to confront issues of prevailing inequities in status and remuneration amongst faculty and this presentation will share new models of faculty that are emerging to address these.
