Field Observations of Severe Convective Storms

This experiential learning course takes students out of the classroom and into the Central Plains of the US: the severe weather capital of the world. Students learn about convective phenomena including storm structure, storm evolution, hazardous weather, and severe weather environments by directly forecasting and decision-making in the moment to anticipate storm initiation and evolution. The hands-on nature of this course enables students to directly apply topics taught in classroom based courses to the real world. Prerequisites include GEOG 5940 Synoptic Meteorology Lab.

Aviation Geography

This course provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the fundamental elements of aviation geography. Students will explore the historical and contemporary evolution of aviation geography across various geographical scales. Additionally, the course will emphasize the essential operational aspects of airlines and airports within a geographical context, such as airline network models and airport catchment areas. Moreover, the instructor will address policies and regulations impacting aviation geography, including environmental regulations and international agreements. Living with Artificial Intelligence

Living with AI (GEOG3703) integrates themes from critical human and digital geographies to examine corporate and alternative large language model development and their lived applications. Students will begin by situating the course within competing definitions of "artificial intelligence" and exploring the historical influence of geography on scientific research into "human intelligence." Students will then examine ai-mediated experiences across digital platforms, urban living, migration, and labor contexts. A significant focus will be placed on investigating ai's uneven environmental impacts, with particular attention to extraction and manufacturing sites in the Global South and data storage facilities in rural America. Finally, students will assess language models that emerge from community-based initiatives and Indigenous ontologies. Through course assessments, students will develop creative approaches to addressing ai’s obscured impacts on societies, economies, and politics, fostering critical geographic thinking about our increasingly ai-integrated world. Political Ecology

This course introduces students to this geographical school of nature-society thought. It situates Political Ecology PE in the hundred years of geographic thought on nature-society relations prior to PE’s emergence in the 1970s, and follows how the field developed since then. It introduces key concepts and methods in the field, and helps students understand how, why, and with what effects PE differs from other approaches. Students will learn how PE concepts and methods have been applied in existing research and engagement, and the course will include a faculty research focus on PE of environmental chemicals in the Anthropocene. The course explores how PE approaches are relevant for understanding today’s issues, and students will themselves learn to apply PE concepts and methods to issues of their choosing.
