Chairman O'Kelly's News Brief

Ganesha

Rachel Mauk-Johnson successfully defended her dissertation this week.  The title of Rachel’s dissertation is “Prediction of Intensity Change Subsequent to Concentric Eyewall Events.”  The members of her committee were Jialin Lin, David Bromwich, Jeff Rogers, Jay Hobgood (advisor) and the representative of the Graduate School was Dr. Douglas McCarty from the Department of Pediatrics.

Well done Rachel, and we look forward to welcoming you back as a post-doctoral lecturer.

Very interesting news that might have escaped general attention: the new British Prime Minister, Theresa May, studied geography at Oxford. Thanks to Kevin Cox for this. May is, of course, the highly experienced and long-serving Home Secretary in the UK, a post without exact parallel in the US.

Kevin and I have exchanged some very interesting snippets following the Brexit vote. Our colleague Ed Malecki was in England the day of the vote and reports that this was topic #1 among the conference attendees. Very interesting times for regional scientists and political geographers!

Meanwhile, back on campus, Harvey Miller will join the leadership team for the Sustainable and Resilient Economy initiative.  As many will know, this is a part of the Discovery Themes Initiative.

Have a great week.
