Chairmans Updates

Ganesha

This week we want to start with big thanks to Jay Hobgood who serves as a weather advisor to Pelotonia. His expertise was a great assistance to the organizers. The weather was excellent and the event another great success. Thanks also to Caitlin Naber who was a member of the ASC Team and a virtual rider in the Pelotonia event and raised funds for Cancer Research. A very good cause!

Other good news this week is that Sam Kay has been awarded a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) fellowship. Sam's advisor is Max Woodworth. The generous award will allow Sam to spend 10 months in China. Well done on this prestigious accomplishment.

We were delighted to welcome Gary and Connie Sharpe as visitors to the Department on Tuesday this week. We presented them with some very nice personal notes of thanks from students who have been awarded the Sharpe Scholarship. Gary is a proud graduate of our department and has great memories of S. Earl Brown among other notable teachers. Thanks to Ed Malecki, Harvey Miller, and Diane Carducci for joining us and participating in the visit.

We all had the opportunity to tour the Research Commons on the 3rd floor of the 18th Avenue Library (formerly the Science and Engineering Library for you old timers). The commons provides very nice shared space for collaboration and faculty research support.  If you are planning a group meeting or need rooms with robust skype /teleconference capability, I recommend you check it out. The Conference Room has a capacity for up to 10 people, along with collaborative and video-conferencing technology.  Project Rooms have a capacity for between four to six people and contain collaborative technology.  Reservation requests can be submitted via the online room reservation system.

Our new term will kick off with new computer enabled teaching space in Derby 0135. Thanks to our tech staff, Jim DeGrand and Jens Blegvad, we are good to go.

Let me use this platform to issue a general and very important reminder to include certain REQUIRED ingredients in your syllabus:

“By the first class session of every course, the instructor must provide students with a course syllabus (either electronically or in printed form) specifying course assignments, expectations, due dates, grading criteria and any other information necessary for the successful completion of the course. A sample syllabus template is included in the Arts and Sciences Curriculum and Assessment Operations Manual. Instructors directing independent studies courses must also provide students by the first day of class with a clear and thorough written statement (either electronically or in printed form) of course expectations and requirements for the successful completion of the course."

If you need older syllabi please visit our Courses and Syllabi listing page, find your course in the right hand navigation bar. For most courses there is a 2 year history of Syllabi. The department also collects and archives your syllabi, and Diane Carducci will be soliciting these from you in the near future (first week of class). This is something we do very well as a department, so keep up the great work.

Let’s wish Happy Birthday, today, to Caitlin Naber!
