Sharpe Field Library
The Department of Geography, supported by a generous gift, has purchased field-related equipment suitable for physical geographers, human geographers, atmospheric science, air transportation, and GIS students. The Sharpe Field Library (SFL), based in the basement of Derby Hall, enhances experiential learning, getting students out of the classroom and into real-world learning contexts.

SFL Inventory
The Sharpe Field Library has a wide range of equipment available for reservation and/or class demonstration. The following image shows the current selection available. Some items, such as the Harris Aerial or AVEX Geodetics LiDAR drone will need prior approval before it can be reserved. If you are unsure, fill out the reservation form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Harris Aerial H6 Hybrid Drone
The Harris Aerial H6 Hybrid is a drone capable of flying under the power of an onboard gasoline generator or a fully electric LiPo battery. Under gas power, the drone can sustain flight times of up to 4 hours and payloads of up to 5 kg. In the fully electric configuration flight times of up to 45 mins are possible with payloads up to 8 kg. The drone weighs 14.5 kg unloaded (32 lbs) in the hybrid configuration and 9.8 kg unloaded (21.5 lbs) in the electric configuration. The drone is capable of carrying a range of sensors including cameras, LiDAR and ground-penetrating radar. Please contact Adam Tjoelker for a flight demonstration at sharpefieldlibrary@osu.edu.

Dell Latitude 5430 Rugged Laptop
The Dell Latitude Rugged Laptop is designed for outdoor use with its rigid outer case with a built-in handle. It has an Intel i7 processor 3.0 to 4.3 GHz, 28W, vPro processor with 64 GB of ram and 1 TB of internal storage. It has a 14" touch screen capable of 1100 nits. It has 3 USB A, 2 USB C, 1 HDMI, 1 VGA, 1 micro-SD, and 1 ethernet port. It is capable of running GIS software, Harris Aerial flight planning software, Trimble Business Center and many more software packages available through ASC Tech.

Canon EOS R50
The Canon EOS R50 has a 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and tan take 4K uncropped movies up to 30 fps oversampled form 6K. The camera comes with an RF-S 18-45mm lens and an optional RF-S55-210mm telephoto zoom lens and a Geekoto tripod.

Solar Power Bank Charger
This small 25000 mAh power bank is capable of keeping small electronic devices charged in the field using the attached 22.5 W solar panel array. It is capable of fast charging with its 3A charging capability. The power bank can charge up to two devices at one time. The total capacity of the power bank is equal to around 7-8 full charges of a phone.

Stansport Freighter Aluminum Frame Pack
The Stansport Freighter Aluminum Frame Pack is a cargo pack that can be used to carry large loads outdoors by lashing or strapping large or bulky items to the frame. The lightweight pack weighs 4.7 lbs and can comfortably carry loads of up to 75 lbs.

Waterdrop Gravity Water Filter
The Waterdrop Gravity Water Filter can be used as both a gravity filter and as a straw. It can filter at rates of up to 700 ml per minute and the gravity filter bag can hold up to 5.7 L. It removes particulates and other impurities from water sources to make them safe for drinking.

Open Reel Tape Measure 100m/330ft
The Open Reel Tape Measure allows for taking measurements in the field of up to 100 m or 330 ft. The end of the tape has a loop to allow for the end to be secured for taking measurements.

Meta Quest 3
The Meta Quest 3 is an excellent VR learning tool that can be used for displaying 3D models and 360 degree videos. It is available for reservation or a demo for classroom and research use. If you would like a demo, please contact us at sharpefieldlibrary@osu.edu to learn more.

Emlid Reach RX Rover & RS 2+ Base Station
The Emlid Reach RX Rover and RS 2+ base station are RTK enabled and can be used to conduct precise kinematic GNSS surveys. These surveys can provide high precision ground control points for drone surveys or be used directly in GIS tools to create survey-grade maps.

Site Pro GPS Base Station Tripod with Center Staff
The Site Pro GPS base station tripod has a center staff to simplify the process of locating the tripod over a known survey marker. It can be used to mount the RS 2+ base station for conducting precise differential GNSS surveys.

GPS Rover Rod and Bipod
This equipment can be used to mount the emlid Reach RX Rover or RS 2+ Base Station. The bipod provides stability for longer measurements and the detachable rover rod is lightweight, making rover surveys easy.

Weather in a Tank Demo
A rotating plexiglass tank spun on a potters wheel can be filled with water and dye to simulate atmospheric circulation and Rossby waves. It is an ideal tool for teaching students about the atmosphere and fluid dynamics. This item is available for both equipment reservations and as a demonstration.

Rotational Inertia Demo
The rotational inertia demo comprises a bicycle wheel with handles and a rotating platform. This is the perfect setup for demonstrating the conservation of rotational inertia. This item is available for both equipment reservations and as a demonstration.

Cloud in a Bottle Demo
The cloud in a bottle demo is an easy solution for simulating the formation of clouds in a classroom setting. This setup uses a bicycle pump and ethanol for cloud generation. This item is available for both equipment reservations and as a demonstration.

Insta 360 X4 8K 360 Camera
The Insta 360 X4 camera is capable of recording 360 degree videos or photos. These videos can be viewed as fully immersive experiences in VR or can be edited and exported to move the field of view throughout the video. These cameras are great for creating VR content or filming in scenarios where you don't want to worry about moving the camera getting your subject in frame while you are walking, biking, driving or flying! A waterproof case, selfie stick, tripod and extra batteries are available.

This handheld microphone is great for interviews where you will be switching between multiple speakers with the same microphone.

This lavalier microphone is great for interview scenarios where you would like professional quality audio recording.

Lascar Easy Log EL-USB-2
Lascar sensors are excellent temperature and humidity loggers that are easy to deploy and can log data for up to three years.

Hobo U23 Pro v2 Temp/Humidity
The U23 Pro is an excellent self-contained temperature and humidity logger in a weather-proof case. It is an excellent tool for creating high accuracy instrumentation networks with little infrastructure necessary. The entire logger can be mounted inside a radiation shield.

Hobo U23 Pro v2 Temp/Humidity External
The U23 Pro external has a 6 foot long cable for fast sensor response and the sensor at the end of the cable can be mounted inside a small radiation shield. The sensor casing is weather-proof and is an excellent high accuracy sensor for instrumentation networks.

DJI Mini Pro 4 Drone
The DJI Mini is the perfect tool for learning how to fly drones as well as take high quality video and images. It weighs under 249 grams which allows it to be flown with minimal restrictions. The drone features a 4K/60fps HDR camera that can shoot in horizontal or vertical format. Each drone comes with three batteries that can fly up to 40 mins each. It is the perfect tool for learning drone mapping skills or doing simple aerial imagery and mapping.

AVEX Geodetics Geo-MMS LiDAR (w/ DJI M600 Drone)
The AVEX Geodetics Geo-MMS is a professional grade LiDAR mapping equipment that was donated from AEP. It is currently fixed to a DJI M600 drone that can be flown after receiving training and certification from the SFL Drone School.

Jackery Explorer 1000 Plus with Solar Charging
The Jackery Explorer 1000 boasts a 1264 Wh power capacity with 2000W output. It can be used to charge standard AC power adapters as well as USB devices. The optional solar panels allow for fast charging as low as 2 hours off the grid. It is the perfect base to take into the field when working with computers or other field equipment that requires power.

Airthings View Radon Sensor
The Airthings View Radon sensor is a device designed to monitor radon exposure in residential settings. The device is also equipped with temperature and humidity sensors. We have a classroom set of 35 of these devices, making it the perfect tool for teaching students about instrumentation and air quality monitoring or conducting an analysis of indoor radon exposure.

YSI 556 MPS
The YSI 556 MPS measures dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, temperature and ORP. It is the perfect handheld tool for sampling water. Conductivity calibration and pH buffer solutions are available.

YSI ProQuatro
The YSI ProQuatro handheld multiparameter meter measures a variety of combinations of dissolved oxygen, conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, resistivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, ORP, pH/ORP combination, ammonium (ammonia), nitrate, chloride and temperature. Also a very powerful lab instrument for BODs, pH and ORP. Conductivity calibration and pH buffer solutions are available.

SonTek Flow Tracker 2 Handheld ADV
The SonTek Flow Tracker is a handheld acoustic doppler velocimeter (ADV) which can take precise measurements of water flow velocity that can be integrated to calculate total flow. With precise measuring capability and an onboard GPS, this is the perfect tool for investigating water flow in the field.

Waders
The waders are great for getting into the water no higher than waist deep. They are the perfect for field sampling activities in the water.

Waterproof Boots
These boots are good for getting around in muddy conditions or shallow water. They are a must-have for any field activities in wet conditions.

Klein Tools Handheld Infrared Thermometer
The handheld infrared thermometers are great for measuring the temperature of nearby objects. The rugged handheld device features a laser indicator to show the diameter of the measurement area. It has a measurement range between -22 to 750 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 to 400 degrees Celsius). It takes a 9 volt battery and has an expected operation time of 10 hours with continuous use of the laser and the screen backlight.

Quest SoundPro Microphone
The Quest SoundPro SE-2-1/3 microphone is a research-grade sound level meter that enables comprehensive analysis of noise in industrial, urban and natural settings. It is the perfect tool for investigating noise pollution for class and individual research projects. A SoundPro AC-300 calibrator is available. DMS software to download data is also available upon request.

Aethlabs AL30 Black Carbon Sensor (Coming Soon)
The AL30 is a resaerch grade black carbon monitor. It can be deployed to accurately measure carbon aerosol pollution accurately for resaerch and class projects focused on urban environments and pollution.

The iPad Mini is the perfect tool for deploying a range of apps in the classroom and in the field. The SFL iPad Minis are in a rugged case, allowing use across a range of conditions.

Owl Labs Smart Video Conference Camera (Coming Soon)
The Owl Labs Meeting Owl is a smart 360 degree 1080p videoconferencing camera that features speaker video tracking, ensuring that the camera view dynamically tracks the active speaker in the room. The Owl also features a speaker and microphone, enabling excellent audio quality on both ends of the call. For larger rooms, two owls can be connected together to extend the range of audio and video pickup beyond the 18 foot pickup radius.

Polsen MO-PL1 Lavalier Microphone for Mobile Devices
The Polsen lavalier microphone is the perfect accessory for recording clear natural sound quality audio in an interview setting using mobile devices. The microphone is optimized for Apple devices but it works with most Android devices.

The following calendar shows the current hours the library is staffed in addition to the date, time, and location equipment training demonstrations. Items may be arranged for pickup and drop-off outside the hours of operation if necessary.

We will get back to you as soon as we can about your request.

The fraction at the end of each reservation listing "n/total" shows the number of reserved items for that date "n" out of the total number available in the SFL.

Sharpe Field Library Drone School

The Sharpe Field Library Drone School provides hands-on experience and training for students interested in drones. Students who are interested in flying the Harris Aerial drone or the M600 LiDAR drone in the Sharpe Field Library inventory will first need to become flight certified by participating in the SFL Drone School. The group also meets to discuss and support achievement of FAA Part 107 certification for students who are interested in getting their commercial drone pilot license. Drone surveying techniques such as photogrammetry mapping with GNSS ground control can also be taught by request.
