The Dept. of Geography Speaker Series presents:
Gabe Schwartzman, Univ. of Tennessee
Topic: Post-Work Politics: Crises of Social Reproduction and Surplus Population in Central Appalachia
Abstract: How do people get by without jobs? And what can we learn about the future of work from the realities of life beyond the wage? Schwartzman draws on over a decade of ethnographic research in the rapidly deindustrializing Appalachian coalfields to theorize post-work politics, an increasingly common condition of life in 'relative surplus labor,' building on scholarship about social reproduction and land in capitalism.
