No major news item this week, but we have an interesting photo from our alumni.

Focus on Recent Graduates

I want to share a photo from some of our globe-trotting PhD graduates. From left to right:

Andy Goetz (PhD, 1987) worked with Ned Taaffe and wrote a dissertation entitled “The Effect of Airline Deregulation on Air Service to Small And Medium-Sized Communities: Case Studies in Northeastern Ohio.” Andy has an established reputation in transportation and he is Professor and Chair, Department of Geography & the Environment, at the University of Denver. Andy's research interests include transportation infrastructure and urban/economic growth, smart growth planning, rail transit systems, transit-oriented developments, intermodal transportation, air transportation and airports, globalization, and sustainability. He is co-editor of one book, Geographies of Air Transport (Ashgate, 2014) and co-author of two books, Denver International Airport: Lessons Learned (McGraw Hill, 1997) and Airline Deregulation and Laissez-Faire Mythology (Greenwood Press, 1992).

Andy Jonas (PhD, 1989) completed both the Masters and Doctorate working with Kevin Cox. His PhD dissertation was entitled: “Local Interests And State Territorial Structures Integration And Fragmentation in Metropolitan Columbus Ohio in The Postwar Period.” Andy is now Professor of Human Geography, in the School of Environmental Sciences (SES), at the University of Hull. Andy is an urban political geographer with research interests in the economic governance and redevelopment of cities and regions in the USA and Europe. He is co-author with Eugene McCann and Mary Thomas of a book on urban geography.

Shih-Lung Shaw (PhD, 1986) was advised by Howard Gauthier. His dissertation was entitled: “A Constrained Attitudinal Model of Urban Travel Mode-Choice Behavior.” Shih-Lung has established a reputation in the area of GIS. He is Professor at University of Tennessee.  He has also moved up in academic administration providing knowledge and guidance to the UT’s international affairs and recruitment. This has provided a substantial release from teaching as he focuses on this important agenda. He is also, of course, the co-author with Harvey Miller of a successful book on Geographic Information Systems for Transportation.

The three friends reunited at the August 2016 IGC conference in Beijing.  Looks like there might be some nice food there in the background. All three have had very successful careers as you can see from their on-line CVS (above). Nice to see these three graduates prospering and thanks to Andy Jonas for the photo, and congrats to Shih-Lung on his 30th “gradiversary.”
