Celebrating our Atmospheric Science faculty

Steven Quiring pointed at a map with Zhengyu Liu

Congratulations to Steven Quiring who has been elected as a 2026 AMS Fellow. Fellows are elected by the AMS Council because of their “outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years.” This is a peer-recognized honor and recognizes excellence in scholarship, leadership, mentoring, community service, and applied work that advances the profession.

Congratulations to Zhengyu Liu, who is the recipient of this year’s AMS Sverdrup Gold Medal, “granted to researchers who make outstanding contributions to the scientific knowledge of interactions between the oceans and the atmosphere, interactions between the oceans and the cryosphere, or ocean biogeochemistry”. The Sverdrup medal was established in 1964 to honor Harald Ulrik Sverdrup (1888–1957), a pioneering Norwegian oceanographer and meteorologist. Nominees for the award are expected to have made fundamental, lasting contributions to the field rather than a single achievement.
