P. Nicolas et al. “January 2016 extensive summer melt in West Antarctica favoured by strong El Niño,” Nature Communications in press. The paper notes that:
• Accurately projecting the future climate of West Antarctica, especially the occurrence of summer surface melt, is essential to accurately predict the fate of West Antarctic ice shelves and of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet as a whole.
• As the climate warms, extreme El Niño are projected to become more frequent, increasing the frequency of major surface melt events in West Antarctica.
