Chairman's News Brief

Ganesha

A new month! Two weeks of fall semester have already zoomed past.

A very special thanks this week to Wesley Haines who is moving on from his highly significant technology position at the BPCRC to pursue his private company. He has been with the Center since 2005 as an Assistant Systems Manager. Can't believe it's been that long! His assistance over the past 10+ years has been enormous and he has always exhibited a cheerful "can-do" attitude. There is a more detailed e-mail for those who need to have information about continuity of services at Byrd. We wish him all the best. Thanks Wes!

OIA has featured both new Geography Education Abroad programs in their newsletter this week. They are also listed as a news item on the OIA website. See the entries called Mapping our World - Sweden, and Geography of the European Union - Cyprus.
Thanks to Ola Ahlqvist and Stavros Constantinou for spearheading these activities.  By the way, there are many other interesting topics. Check them out!

Focus on Recent Graduate
Alasdair Rae is currently Senior Lecturer in Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield. He did an MA (with Kevin Cox) in 2003. His thesis was entitled "Issues in the Socio-Spatial Organization of Higher Education: The case of the University of Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute (UHI)." He subsequently earned a PhD in Urban and Regional Policy at the University of Liverpool in 2007.  He is Director of the Sheffield Q-Step Centre - an initiative designed to significantly improve the quantitative skills of social science undergraduates. Although his time with us was short, we are pleased to report on his progress.

Speaking of quantitative skills: for all our new colleagues a quick quiz question ... when we say that we do things "by the numbers" we usually mean some kind of numerical score or count. But, where on campus can you see "the numbers?"  Kudos next week to the first reply by e-mail: okelly.1@osu.edu.
