Chairman O'Kelly's News Brief

Morton O'Kelly

First this week some good news from Dan Sui and his team. Dan has been able to continue publication during his work at NSF. He also has plans, later this semester, to present some briefing for Social Science Chairs (here at OSU) based on the emerging scene at the foundation. The following two papers (co-authored with Bo Zhao) were accepted for publication during the past three weeks:

Visualizing the gay community in Beijing with location-based social media. Environment and Planning A (published on-line first 12/20/2016, DOI: 0308518X16685885).

True lies in geospatial big data: Detecting location spoofing in social media.  Annals of GIS (accepted 1/5/17, in press).

Bo Zhao completed the Ph.D. in 2015. The title of his dissertation was “Detecting Location Spoofing in Social Media: Initial Investigations of an Emerging Issue in Geospatial Big Data.” He is currently at Oregon State University as an Assistant Professor.

Another former student of Dan’s Xining Yang, after spending one year at California State University (Chico) on a tenure-track position, has accepted another tenure track position at Eastern Michigan University. Xining, working with Dan, also completed a dissertation in 2015: “Exploring the world via volunteered geographic information (VGI): Space, place, and people.”

Congratulations to Max Woodworth once again as the recipient of an Early Career Grant from the Regional Studies Association (UK), a global forum for city and regional research, development and policy. The grant is for Woodworth’s project, “Assessing project-led development in China’s new towns,”
