Impressive Accomplishment by ASP Undergraduate Matthew Campbell

Matt Campbell

We would like to share some good news sent to us by an Alumni of our Atmospheric Sciences Program Dr. Ariel E. Cohen, Meteorologist NOAA/NWS/NCEP/Storm Prediction Center, Adjunct Assistant Professor University of Oklahoma School of Meteorology. Picture shows Matt with his Mentor Group and Ariel Cohen in the back right.

Ariel writes,
Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you know that Ohio State Atmospheric Sciences student Matthew Campbell has officially published his first lead-authored manuscript in the American Meteorological Society's "Weather and Forecasting" journal.
His article, entitled "Structure and Motion of Severe-Wind-Producing Mesoscale Convective Systems and Derechos in Relation to the Mean Wind," was released yesterday in the April 2017 issue of this journal.  Myself, along with Matt's other Research Experiences for Undergraduates mentors from Oklahoma, are all co-authors.

Matt's research represents a significant contribution to atmospheric sciences in the area of mesoscale convective systems, and it is incredibly impressive that he is now published before completing senior year at Ohio State.  Having been his primary mentor, and co-mentoring him with my REU mentors from 2005 (and a few others), and then collectively bringing his work to publication stage has been a full-circle experience, no doubt.  We were sure to have The Ohio State University listed as one of his affiliations, and I find it highly likely that Campbell et al. (2017) will be a referenced article in the future.

I want to thank all of you, and the entire Atmospheric Sciences and Geography departments at Ohio State, for being such a support to both me and Matt.  Matt is a meteorological rock star.  Undoubtedly -- Dr. Hobgood and Dr. Rogers -- you have provided a very sturdy foundation for both of us to leverage our future from, and it means a lot to me that I've had the chance to have become such great friends and co-workers with another Ohio State student years after I started (2003 --> 2017).  You have provided outstanding mentorship, as well, and work like this is able to become accomplished, because of your encouragement.

Here is the official citation for Matt's work:

All the best...
