Faculty News:
Harvey Miller received the honorary title of a 2021 Fellow for the American Association of Geographers (AAG). AAG Fellows are recognized for their geographic research, advancement of practice, and careers devoted to strengthening the field of geography, including teaching and mentoring. Dr. Miller was recognized for being a pioneering transportation geographer who has contributed to analytical time geography, GIS and spatial analysis, sustainable mobility and for his focus on diversity and inclusion in transportation science and policy.
Ellen Mosley-Thompson and Lonnie Thompson have received the BBVA Foundation's Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Climate Change for their glacier ice studies that show our climate is changing at an unprecedented speed. Their work in the study of high mountain ice masses has provided the only detailed climate record that is able to connect climate variability with the rise and fall of ancient civilizations. Alumni News:
John Banghoff, who earned his BS in Atmospheric Science from The Ohio State University in 2015, worked with The Ohio State Atmospheric Sciences Alumni Society to organize a speed mentoring event for current Atmospheric Science students. This virtual event took place on January 20th and allowed current students to network and seek guidance from OSU Alumni from the National Weather Service, private sector, broadcast meteorology, military, and academia.
Sohyun Park (PhD Geog, 2021), Rebecca Chapman (PhD student), and Darla Munroe published a paper in the Journal of Land Use Science, Examining the relationship between migration and land cover change in rural U.S.: evidence from Ohio, United States, between 2008 and 2016. They found that rural communities in Ohio have become more diverse overall, but more uniform locally, with worrisome trends in greater income segregation and inequality.
