Chairman O'Kelly's News Brief

Morton O'Kelly

One of the great aspects of the AAG annual meeting, completed a few weeks ago, was the opportunity to meet and say hello to our recent grads. Everyone has their own circle of course, but I was happy to say “Hi” to several former PhD students who have had a role in our program and in some cases have assisted in our classes:
Calvin Tribby (2016), Peter Chen (2015), Caleb Gallemore (2013), Jeff Olson (2013), Michael Ewers (2010), and Tim Hawthorne (2010). It was great to see a cluster of other grads assembled at the international reception [among others: Zoe Pearson (2016), Nick Crane (2014), and Justine Law (2014)]. I hope all had a great time reconnecting. Apologies for not getting to chat with everyone who was there! You may wish to review the list of recent grads.
Suggestions for ways to have an OSU event at a future AAG (and an organizer!) are welcome. This was the most frequently asked question while I was at the AAG.

Late last week we noted two advisees of Harvey Miller having committee meetings to sketch out their doctoral research plans: Young Jaegal and Jinyung Lee. In both cases the committees are Ningchuan Xiao, Elisabeth Root, and Morton O’Kelly. As a reminder to all, the department very strongly encourages such meetings and early committee dialog.

We are pleased to welcome Morteza Karimzadeh (ABD, Penn State) to our department later this summer. He will be joining us as a lecturer for 2017-18 teaching in spatial analysis and GIS.

I am pleased to forward and mention this opportunity: The Regional Studies Association has allocated financial resources to support its members and offers a range of funding opportunities to suit different career stages. These opportunities provide members with a chance to apply for financial help to support their research, run networking events, receive awards for excellence and help towards the costs of travel to attend non-RSA events and present their work to international audiences. Non-members may apply for membership at the same time as applying for a grant. Max Woodworth has taken advantage of their Early Career Grant fairly recently. They have quite generous funding for those in their core areas of interest. I’d be glad to forward their information to you if you need it.

A word from the University:
Beginning Wednesday, April 26, you will no longer have the option to forward your email to a non-OSU domain. For those who are currently forwarding their emails, there will be a grace period until September 29, at which point that forwarding will no longer work. If you are currently forwarding your email, it is recommended that you discontinue this practice before the grace period ends in order to prevent any issues that may arise. You should be conducting your official e-mail on the OSU system.

Finally, this week, Caitlin Naber had a great suggestion: Please consider including pictures of any events that you want to bring to our attention. We’d like to build up a nice archive for future broadcasts.
