Chairman O'Kelly's News Brief

Lots of great developments this week.
Good news from Desheng Liu: he has received official notification from NSF of a new award.
This is for collaborative research on: Hydrologic and Permafrost Changes Due to Tree Expansion into Tundra. The award is from NSF’s Office of Polar Programs. Congrats!
Max Woodworth was recognized for “best poster” at the Energy Impacts Symposium 2017, which was held here in Columbus this week. The symposium is billed as a trans-disciplinary event taking a global look at energy resource community impacts. The poster was titled "Comparing resource boomtowns: assessing urban change in the energy frontiers of China and the United States."
Jonathan Wille who graduated with an MS in Atmospheric Science in 2015 (advisor David Bromwich) has accepted a 3-year Ph.D. position with the Institute of Environmental Geosciences at the University of Grenoble in France to start this fall. Jonathan had hoped to focus on the Arctic but decided Antarctic studies, where he has a strong track record, offered enduring challenges.
Focus on Emeritus Professors
Our good friend and colleague John Arnfield has been retired for some years now and lives in Church Stretton, Shropshire, UK. He has been active since retirement and has been awarded the AAG Climate Specialty Group Lifetime Achievement Award (2002). Additionally, he received the Luke Howard Award from The International Association for Urban Climate in 2010.
Luke Howard, by the way, first wrote about the distinct climates of urban areas in "The Climate of London," published in 1818. He was also the person who first classified and named clouds - cumulus, cirrus, altostratus etc.).
Hal Moellering informs me about a co-authored paper "The Academic SDI – Towards understanding spatial data infrastructures for research and education" presented by the ICA SDI Commission at the recent ICC 2017 conference in Washington. It deals with utilizing the SDI concept in the academic setting.
This refereed paper was included in the Springer Verlag volume titled: Advances in Cartography and GIScience. ICACI 2017, Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and Cartography.
Stay tuned next week for an update on our Infrastructure Renovations
