Lots of news this week reflecting faculty and graduate student engagement:

Kendra McSweeney published a co-authored opinion piece in the Washington Post this week with Sarah Chayes, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The article is entitled:  “Want to limit migration? We can start by supporting democracy in Honduras.”

Morton O’Kelly’s paper on “Locational Modeling in Spatial Analysis: Development and Maturity of Concepts” (which was a long time in the making!) has appeared in a book edited by Jean-Claude Thill entitled: Spatial Analysis and Location Modeling in Urban and Regional Systems, Advances in Geographic Information Science

Madhuri Sharma (PhD, 2009, Larry Brown, adviser) published “Race, Place, and the Persisting Income Divide in the U.S. Southeast, 2000–2014” in Growth and Change 48(4), December 2017, 570–589.  DOI: 10.1111/grow.12214
Madhuri is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Deondre Smiles (Kendra McSweeney, adviser) wrote a book review of "In Divided Unity: Haudenosaunee Reclamation at Grand River" by Theresa McCarthy. This review will appear in the American Indian Culture and Research Journal next March. The book itself centers around the 2006 reclamation and occupation of lands in Caledonia, Ontario by the people of the Six Nations First Nation, setting it as part of an over 200-year history of assertions of sovereignty by the Six Nations.

Anurag Mazumdar (Nancy Ettlinger, adviser) has published a piece in Economic and Political Weekly.

National News

The AAG has announced two new editors to take the positions of Cartography Editor for the AAG Journals (Annals, The Professional Geographer, and GeoHumanities) and the Methods, Models, and GIS Editor for the Annals of the AAG. Stephen Hanna will be the new Cartography Editor while Ling Bian will assume the role of the Methods, Models and GIS Editor. Read More here.
