Chairman O'Kelly's News Brief

Morton

Lots of news reflecting the diverse interests and expertise of our faculty this week:

Mat Coleman with Co-Authors Angela Stuesse and Sarah Horton had a piece in the Huffington Post, entitled "Driving While Latino." It describes how, for immigrant communities, every instance behind the wheel becomes an opportunity for scrutiny at the hands of law enforcement.

Other great publicity for our faculty research: Steven Quiring and his collaborators have been running some simulations for power outage prediction in the path of Hurricane Matthew.

The model results are available here (updated as the storm evolves)

Here is the university’s release and a link to it online

We are always delighted to be in collaboration with our rivals up north. Locally here Steven was interviewed by Katie Farrell of NBC Channel 4 on his recent research on power outages anticipated during Hurricane Matthew.  On the interview, Steven has a very nice sound bite regarding prediction: "it's easy to be wrong." With humility such as this, and yet a great track record, we can see why NBC called on his expertise.

After many frustrating bumps in the road, Jim DeGrand and Bryan Mark have been able to iron out an agreement to conduct climatic instrumentation work for GST and the first of what we hope is a steady stream of small grants has been approved. They will be collecting weather data in the field and feeding it to a central collection point. The example here shows the value of persistence and the merit of operating with the Office of Sponsored Programs. I believe this could be a model for future endeavors! Well done guys.

Nancy Ettlinger has been invited to participate in an interesting discussion at the University of Chicago in December to discuss an evolving understanding of the relation of technology to the self as this relation is understood through the humanities. This is a new venture and seems quite stimulating.

A paper co-authored by Chengbi Liu and Dan Sui entitled "Exploring the spatiotemporal pattern of cyberbullying with Yik Yak"  has been recently accepted by The Professional Geographer.

Best wishes to Caitlin Naber as she continues to recuperate from a procedure last week. We look forward to her speedy return to the office.

Retrospective best wishes and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Diane Carducci who had a birthday last Wednesday.
