Chairman O'Kelly's News Brief

Morton O'Kelly

Welcome back after spring break.

I am pleased to announce the third recipient of the Martha L. Corry Faculty Fellowship: this prestigious award goes to Bryan Mark. He has made considerable contributions to the department and most notably is currently serving as State Climatologist. This honor has been deservedly earned as Bryan has risen through the ranks here at OSU. The endowment supports this award and runs through June 2021. I would like to thank Ed Malecki for his distinguished contributions during his term as the previous Corry Fellow.

Sam Kay successfully completed his PhD qualifying exam this week. His committee members were Becky Mansfield, Kendra McSweeney, and Dan Sui. Sam’s advisor is Max Woodworth.

Last week Harvey Miller presented the 16th Annual Malcolm L. Comeaux Lecture at Arizona State University in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning.
The talk was entitled: Big Data for Healthy Places: Building Healthier Environments through Opportunistic GIScience
As part of the visit ASU published an extensive interview with Harvey.

This week SBS was pleased to host Dr. Timothy Nokken, Program Director of the Political Science Program in the Division of Social and Economic Sciences at NSF. He provided slides on “Funding Opportunities and Grant-writing Tips for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Scientists.” These are available from me as needed.
