The Geography Department hosted a low-density Meet & Greet at the Ohio Stadium on August 23rd.

Faculty News:
Jim DeGrand and Bryan Mark recently led another Great Basin Experiential Expedition ("GBEX") to Great Basin National Park this earlier this month (2-9 August), a trip featuring ongoing research of alpine climate and environmental change.
Also along were two OSU undergraduates Garrett Dort (senior Geography major) and Chance Carafice (senior Engineering Physics). Chance was awarded a Research Distinction Scholarship for his project mapping Andean glaciers and lake evolution with Google Earth Engine, co-supervised by Bryan Mark). Tal Shutkin (MA student) and collaborating faculty from Sinclair Community College, Scott Reinemann (2013 Atm Sci Ph.D.) and University of Georgia, Dave Porinchu (former OSU Geography Professor) rounded out the group.
Activities included extensive tree coring, rock glacier mapping with a differential GPS survey, and ongoing temperature/humidity monitoring with embedded sensor network.
Kevin Cox (Emeritus Professor) wrote an opinion piece for the Dispatch, arguing that impact fees are needed to make developers pay for the public costs of their projects: Developers rule Columbus, shed 'crocodile tears for the consumer.'
Student News:
Nick Kinyanjui passed his Master's exam. The title of Nick's research paper is "Sounds of the map: Testing the effectiveness of sound in understanding spatial data." His committee members include Larry Feth (Speech & Hearing), Harvey Miller, and Ningchuan Xiao as advisor.
Alumni News:
Sam Kay (PhD 2020, Geog) accepted a position as Human Geography Acting Assistant Professor at the University of Washington.
Upcoming Events:
Conversations about a Changing Planet and Latin America
Bryan Mark will converse via Zoom with Gabo Zeballos (PhD candidate, Geog) about Latin America in a planet two degrees hotter.
Hosted by the Abya Yala Student Organization, with the support of the Center of Latin American Studies.
The conversation will be held in Spanish.
