Chairman O'Kelly's News Brief

Ganesha

On Monday, March 6, Hui Kong made a public presentation after successfully passing candidacy last week. Her adviser is Dan Sui, and committee members are Morton O’Kelly, Max Woodworth and Ningchuan Xiao.

We had so much news last week that we had to skip a few important items. One item of note was that Harvey Miller presented a well-received webinar on Using GIS to Make Urban Mobility More Sustainable for the transport community organized by the National Academy Mapping Sciences committee.

This created good publicity for OSU and attracted a national audience. For example, the webinar was seen by Duane Marble, one of our emeritus professors. On a more local level CURA also ran a successful lunchtime presentation by Dr. Liang. A great week for CURA.

Thanks to Ola Ahlqvist for spotting this: Nature magazine has a special on human migration, including an interesting short commentary on monitoring technologies:

As mentioned prospectively a few months ago, we now have received a copy of Elizabeth Root’s new book.
Health and Medical Geography, by Michael Emch, Elisabeth Dowling Root, and Margaret Carrell (4th edition) has just appeared (February, 2017), published by Guilford Press.

Great news too from Steven Quiring who appears to be in many places at once this week! Actually the Nagoya event was a colloquium put on here at OSU by the Translational Data Analytics Group: The Nagoya University event was entitled “Modeling the impact of tropical cyclones on electrical power systems.”
In addition at LANL, Center for Nonlinear Studies, Smart Grid Seminar series on Tuesday, Steve presented: “Modeling the impact of tropical cyclones on electrical power systems: Lessons learned from a decade of research.”

As I am sure you have seen, and read, there is a March for Science event on April 22, Earth Day. We normally celebrate Earth Day enthusiastically as Geographers, but this, I suspect, will not be a routine event. I simply echo the announcement by the AAG, encourage you to click through on this link.  See also the satellite event here in Columbus.

Have a safe and enjoyable Spring Break!
