Geography 1900 Blimp

Geography 1900 (Extreme Weather and Climate) prepares for their annual vertical profile lab outside Derby Hall. This aptly labeled blimp has automated weather instruments attached to the tether which at certain levels strives to gather data that will describe the vertical profile of the lowest 500 ft of the atmosphere with regard to Temperature, Humidity, Wind speed and direction.

Faculty News:

Alvaro Montenegro authored the following paper, Modeling water crossings leading to the arrival of early Homo in Sulawesi, Indonesia, via paleoclimate drift experiments, in the Journal of Archaeological Science Reports.  Lead author was alumna Mary Grace Thibault, (MS ASP, 2018).

Student News: 

Ruixuan Ding (BS student, GIS) was awarded First Place in the undergraduate student poster competition at the 5th Annual Midwest Student Conference on Atmospheric Sciences which is run by the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. Her poster was titled "Quantifying Land-Atmosphere Interactions in the Columbus, OH Metropolitan Area Using Lightning Data".

PhD student Armita Kar is lead author on a paper just published in the Annals of the American Association of Geographers. This study uses mobile phone data to reveal stark socioeconomic differences in travel during the COVID lockdowns in Franklin County, Ohio.

Katie Krupala passed her candidacy exam earlier today. Her committee members include Kendra McSweeneyBecky MansfieldHarvey Miller and Madhumita Dutta as advisor.  Katie’s research is titled: Unpacking Central Ohio Community Land Trust: A Feminist Urban Geography Lens.

Luyu Liu passed his PhD candidacy exam. His committee consisted of Huyen LeNingchuan XiaoAndre Carrel (Civil Environmental and Geodetic Engineering) and his advisor, Harvey Miller.

In a paper published in Transportation Research RecordJonathan Stiles (post-doc), Armita Kar (PhD student), Jinhyung Lee (PhD, 2020) and Harvey Miller show that severe crash outcomes were more likely under COVID stay-at-home guidelines because of decreased traffic volumes. This study provides more evidence that our roads are designed for speed not safety.

Alumni News: 

Naomi Adaniya (MA Geog, 2013) began a new position as Chief Data Officer at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the Office of the Administrator. The DEA is one of the law enforcement agencies at the U.S. Department of Justice
